Aesthetic experience has been transformed by the way we produce, circulate and consume, leading to the routinisation of novelty and the complex mixture of positive and negative feelings we now associate with many aesthetic experiences. Cultural theorist Sianne Ngai argues that three almost ‘trivial’ aesthetic categories, being the Zany, the Cute and in this particular case, the Interesting, are best suited to describing current experiences and cultural/social conditions. Interesting is a publication and installation which seeks to make explicit how the interesting manifests itself in our everyday experience, captured through the act of vernacular photography (specifically, through the phone camera). Structured into five visual lessons, it demonstrates the aesthetic’s entanglement within daily routines, conversations, social media use and personal values, stimulating a tangible relationship with complex aesthetic theory.
